CraftWoods has been processing and supplying beautiful timber since 1990. All of the timber comes from Cheshire Tree Surgeons activities so that we can say that nothing is ever wasted apart from the tree of course. We have been established in the heart of Vale Royal (the very middle of Cheshire) since 1985 and deliver best tree care as well as tree understanding to the people of Cheshire and across the country throughout that time.

Tree Valuation using Conservation Value – A completely overlooked metric currently not used in valuing trees even though It has so much more meaning in practice.

At the request of my friend Cassian Humphreys, I have become involved in a very interesting situation involving trees on the other side of the Planet and specifically, I have been asked if I could provide a Tree Valuation to help the process by which the future of an avenue of trees is considered by a local council and the community affected by the trees and their retention, or their potential removal.

Cheshire Tree Surgeons started in 1985 and have served Cheshire tree and woodland owners ever since. Tree work is in our opinion the best job in the world for many reasons and the trees of Cheshire have provided many challenges to keep things interesting. The best trees growing on the Cheshire plain could be the huge Beech and Ash trees or the many hedgerow Oaks. Sadly Cheshire lost the evocative Elms in the 1976 outbreak of Dutch Elm Disease and the Cathedral like nature of many rural roads was for ever changed as a result of their loss.

I took my classic Volkswagen Transporter Type 25 SYNCRO (4WD) pickup to the VW show at Tatton Park Knutsford on Sunday 6th of August to start the sad process of finding it its new forever home.

If that sounds to you like I’m trying to re-home a pet, in a way, I am…

When I bought it back in 1991 it was the best pickup that money could buy and it has been my company car and Cheshire Tree Surgeons flagship vehicle ever since.

www.CraftWoods.co.uk is the recycling / upcycling arm of Cheshire Tree Surgeons as it sells timber that we have processed and prepared for crafting into useful items around the home (Craft Woods).

The utilisation of a wasted resource (amenity trees) is our focus and by adding strategic value to our bi-products we are making our tree management more profitable and cheaper for our tree care clients.

It is sad when a tree is removed but we hope that it is less sad if the timber can be used creatively and positively, to make beautiful and long-lasting natural products.

Here at Cheshire Tree Surgeons, we like to work with trees but tree removal is an unfortunate part of our range of services so we like to work with wood too, if only to make sure that it is not wasted and to enable it to be used creatively.

We have made many hundreds of timber and woodchip landscape features for schools and other clients in Cheshire and further afield.

We typically install and leave them, wondering how long they might last in service but yesterday I stopped by a Land Rover showroom near Knutsford where we installed a picnic bench set way back in 2003.

This is a simple idea that sprang from the Utility Arboriculture “coal face”and being exposed to risks and consequences (that is after all what an Arborist does, deals with risks and consequences).

The simple idea that struck me was that vehicles working close to power lines, should be able to sense if they become energised (through contact with power lines), with a potentially deadly electrical charge.

Amazingly such a sensor did not exist before I invented it as borne out by the UK and US patents that have been granted.

golden cypress wilmslow 1

Tree care can be a wonderful thing to do when you have clients who love their trees but would also like those trees to fit into their garden and their lives, with as few conflicts as possible. Take this tree for example. It is a lovely Golden Cypress growing over a sunroom in Wilmslow.

Looking back over 32 years managing trees (and Arborists) for Cheshire Tree Surgeons

I recently uncovered a series of images taken over a period of about 10 years that show the evolution of our teams of Arborists and equipment in the early years.

This first one is from 1988, just after returning from our work restoring the City of London Cemetery & Crematorium and showing the “Becker Stump Cutter” that was featured on Tomorrows World and TVS News.

lime trees mansfield 1 780x426

A Property Developer friend of ours asked us to go over to Mansfield in Nottingham to sort out a difficult planning issue that had evolved and help make the trees better suit the properties now built adjacent to them and waiting for buyers.

The five Lime trees are close to the new properties so Crown Lifting is going to bring light into the windows and although it is hard to see when they are in full leaf, these trees have been given a traditional crown reduction in the past.
